Root Cause Analysis - Solving the Correct Problem
Tuesday June 16, 2026 9:45am - 11:00am AKDT
DESCRIPTION:
Root Cause Analysis is a structured approach for ensuring teams address the right problem rather than its symptoms. This one-hour session focuses on using equity-centered, SPED-relevant tools (e.g., problem statements, fishbone diagrams, and “5 Whys”) to uncover underlying system drivers impacting students with disabilities. Participants will learn how accurate problem identification leads to more effective, sustainable improvement.

OBJECTIVES:
Differentiate symptoms from root causes in special education challenges.  Use structured RCA tools to analyze SPED systems and practices.  Develop clear, actionable problem statements grounded in evidence and equity.

Lost Without a Map: Why MTSS Readiness Depends on Knowing Your Interventions
Tuesday June 16, 2026 12:40pm - 12:55pm AKDT
DESCRIPTION:
As 2028 MTSS expectations approach, many districts are discovering a hard truth: they have interventions—but not a system. This session explores how building an intervention map clarifies roles, strengthens Tier 1–3 coherence, and prepares schools for data-based decision making under evolving accountability expectations. Participants will learn how intervention mapping supports equity, compliance, and instructional effectiveness—while avoiding the common trap of “more interventions without more impact.”

OBJECTIVES:
Explain the purpose and essential components of an intervention map and how it supports coherence across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 within an MTSS framework. Analyze current intervention systems for gaps, redundancies, and misalignment that limit equity, fidelity, and data-based decision making. Identify actionable next steps for developing or refining an intervention map that increases MTSS readiness and instructional clarity in preparation for 2028 expectations.

Empathy Interviews as an investigation tool
Tuesday June 16, 2026 2:45pm - 4:00pm AKDT
DESCRIPTION:
Empathy interviews are a critical investigation tool for understanding the lived experiences of students with disabilities, families, and educators beyond what compliance data can show. This one-hour session introduces how empathy interviews can surface barriers, strengths, and unmet needs within special education systems, while modeling trauma-informed questioning and listening practices. Participants will learn how to use these insights to refine problem statements, improve service delivery, and support more inclusive, student-centered SPED practices.

OBJECTIVES:
Conduct empathy interviews using trauma-informed, inclusive questioning.  Identify key themes and barriers impacting SPED experiences.  Use insights to improve student-centered special education practices.
